In the wake of a series of police killings around the country, Sunday in St. Petersburg community activists held a forum on police violence and institutional racism. The city's new police chief backed out of participating- which didn't sit well with the audience.

Political and religious leaders in Israel frequently incite violence toward Palestinians, Africans and other non-Jews; that’s the message of Israeli journalist and filmmaker David Sheen.

Sheen will speak at 6:00 p.m Thursday at the University of South Florida in Tampa in the Marshall Student Center room 2708 about racism in Israel directed at non-Jews, Africans and Palestinians.

Sheen grew up in Toronto has lived in Israel for more than a decade.

The recent shooting and death of Ferguson, Missouri teenager, Michael Brown, has shaken the St. Louis suburb, as well as the African-American community’s sense of security around the nation. While police and protesters continued to clash in Ferguson, WMNF’s Crystal Farina reported on Tampa’s own demonstration over the weekend.

The nickname of the NFL team in Washington, D.C., is considered by many people to be a racial slur against indigenous Americans.

And today a federal trademark board concurred, calling it "disparaging of Native Americans" and recommending canceling the team's trademark protections. The team has faced pressure for years to change its name from the “R-word,” but it responded today by announcing it will appeal.
