Hillsborough County is one step closer to instituting a Domestic Partner Registry, where couples can sign up for legal protections, regardless of their marital status -- the commission voted unanimously Wednesday morning to move forward, after some discussion and public comment.

The proposal was introduced by Commissioner Kevin Beckner.

President Barack Obama is heading to Tampa Tuesday and will meet Wednesday morning with leaders of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base to review strategies for the expanding war in Iraq and Syria.

Joining him will be Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who said Tuesday the U.S. is “at war with ISIL as we are with Al Qaeda.”

Florida Governor Rick Scott is attending a fundraiser Tuesday evening in Tampa; and outside, protesters will be handing out hand sanitizers they say will help keep peoples hands free of dirty politics.

WMNF interviewed Ana Tinsly, a spokesperson for Florida for All, one of the groups organizing what they’re calling the “#ShadyRick Hand Sanitizers” protest.

Fast food workers are striking Thursday across the nation demanding a minimum wage of fifteen dollars an hour; here in the Tampa area, nearly 100 supporters chanted on the sidewalk in front of a McDonald’s restaurant at the corner of 56th Street and Fowler Avenue in Temple Terrace.

Hillsborough County may consider a high-speed ferry linking MacDill Air Force Base with communities in the south county where many workers live.

Last month one environmental group, Audubon Florida, criticized the plan because a terminal is proposed for reclaimed wetlands in the Schultz Preserve.

But now, the chair of another group, the Tampa Bay Sierra Club's Kent Bailey, tells WMNF they support the proposed ferry across Tampa Bay.

The Tampa teenager who was beat up by Israeli police last month shortly after his cousin was killed in the West Bank was sentenced to house arrest while recovering from his injuries. I sat down with Tariq Abukhdeir last week at his house and asked what it was like to be sentenced to house arrest.
