The City of Tampa is planting trees today in honor of Florida Arbor Day. Students and city employees planted three American Liberty Elm trees at MacFarlane Park on North MacDill Avenue Friday morning.
“Well, I think the most important thing is to recognize that the city of Tampa has been Tree City recipient for over thirty years – I think 35 years or close to it – which means we have a very aggressive and positive tree-planting program and tree care program in the city.”

More than 100 trees in Ybor City were chopped down to waist high stumps last month with what seemed like little warning. Now Tampa City Council is asking why it was such a surprise and what is going to be done to replace the hacked landscaping. Officials from the Parks and Recreation Department said residents and businesses in the area were told some trees would be cut down and replaced, but that wasn’t enough for Tampa City Council member Frank Reddick.
