Only one of five Pinellas County congressional candidates fielding questions at a political forum in St. Pete Friday supports the federal healthcare law. Of the three Republicans, one Libertarian and one Democrat, only Alex Sink thought the law should continue to be enforced as is.

“The roll out has been a disaster. The administration has failed us, but I believe that Americans deserve the right to health insurance and affordable healthcare.”

A progressive candidate who had been vying for U.S. Representative Bill Young’s seat on Capital Hill is throwing in the towel.

Jessica Ehrlich’s withdrawal comes just days after former Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink announced she was entering the race. The national Democratic Party as well as EMILY’s List have backed Sink.

In a statement Wednesday Ehrlich wrote,

Republican U.S. Representative C.W. Bill Young has decided to retire.

During his 43 years in Congress, Young has been influential on military spending.

The 82-year-old lawmaker from Pinellas County told the Tampa Bay Times that he won't seek re-election next year and will complete 22 terms in the House.

Jessica Ehrlich is running as a Democrat for the Pinellas County Congressional seat being vacated by Bill Young. Young defeated Ehrlich last November.
