Today, Florida’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson sent a letter to Gov. Charlie Crist asking for a special legislative session on oil drilling. Also today, Crist said he wants to call a special session to consider a constitutional ban on oil drilling in state waters within the next two weeks.

Today peace activists from St. Pete for Peace and Veterans for Peace protested outside an event hosted by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, where the keynote speaker was Gen. David Petraeus.
The groups were rallying to "support the troops who refuse to take part in war crimes,” as well as protesting Gen. Petraeus' appearance and the Chamber of Commerce's push to curtail civil liberties at BayWalk.

Saturday night, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker was given a farewell celebration at Demens Park, courtesy of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce. The event was protested by homeless activists who believe that Mayor Baker’s record deserves scrutiny for his mistreatment of the homeless population.
A small bridge and a waterway separated the attendees of Mayor Baker’s farewell party from the homeless protesters outside. Tickets for the farewell celebration ranged from $125 up to $10,000. ...
