After a hearing that lasted nearly six hours, the St. Petersburg City Council voted 4-4 to reject an ordinance that would have privatized the sidewalk that lines the front portion of Baywalk.

Police administrators have cleared St. Petersburg Police officer Terrance Nemeth of all wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Javon Dawson in June.

Nemeth had previously been cleared of wrongdoing by Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe. His supervisors were looking to see whether Nemeth had violated any departmental policy, while McCabe’s review focused on whether he broke any laws.

Regardless of age, race, ideals and party preference, opposition to the Wall Street bailout united several progressive groups and demonstrators who gathered in St. Petersburg on Saturday for a protest and march to City Hall.

“No justice, no peace, don’t bail out Wall Street” was just one of the many chants that resonated in the streets of downtown St. Petersburg early Saturday morning as a crowd of more than 50 people gathered at Williams Park to condemn the bailout.

Today, a coalition of seven groups from across the ideological spectrum encouraged people to join a march on St. Petersburg City Hall on Saturday. The demonstration will protest the Wall Street bailout passed by the Senate on Wednesday night.

In June, teenager Javon Dawson was shot twice in the back and killed by a St. Petersburg Police officer. Yesterday at school, his younger brother, Keon, was pulled out of class and his belongings were searched because the school received a tip that he had a gun.

Dawson’s family and supporters are calling it another example of the St. Pete Police harassing and intimidating people who witnessed his brother’s shooting.

Two St. Petersburg Police officers were suspended Thursday for allowing their personal feelings to influence a decision to tow a truck in June.
