Labor groups today asked the Federal Trade Commission to determine whether Walmart violated federal election laws recently by organizing meetings across the country recently, where they discussed the impact of elected Democrats on legislation that would make it easier for workers to unionize companies, including Walmart.

That legislation is the Employee Free Choice Act, which Walmart opposes.

Critics of a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter in Tarpon Springs are cheering a decision last night by the city’s Board of Adjustment.

The board voted 3-2 to accept an appeal by several concerned citizens to treat changes to the approved site plan for the store as “major" rather than "minor."

Colin Fisk is an organizer with the group Wal-Mart Alliance for Reform Now and one of those protesting the proposal.

For more than three years, environmentalists in northern Pinellas County have been fighting against construction of a Wal-Mart on the banks of the Anclote River. Next month the Board of Adjustments in Tarpon Springs will consider the issue. This morning, WMNF spoke with Andy Ennis, the Treasurer for the Concerned Citizens and Friends of the Anclote River.

There will be a public Board of Adjustments meeting on January 16th at the Tarpon Springs City Hall.
