Former state Representative, Democrat Rick Kriseman, filed paperwork today to run for mayor of St. Petersburg. In a message to supporters posted on YouTube, Kriseman said he would challenge incumbent Bill Foster.

The iconic inverted pyramid that is the St. Petersburg Pier may have just rung in its last new year. St. Pete City Council members voted last year to have the Pier demolished at the end of this May. People from all over the country will be gathering in St. Petersburg next week for the African People’s Solidarity Committee’s international conference. Groups from all over the world were invited. Penny Hess who chairs the group said some 100 people will brainstorm ideas on how non-minority groups can stand in solidarity with oppressed communities in Africa.
