The Tampa Housing Authority has recently received more than a half a million dollars to help local Veterans who are homeless or cannot afford their housing payments.

In July the Department of Housing and Urban Development announced grants to public housing agencies in every state. The funding totals $46.2 million. First up retired Tampa Congressman Sam Gibbons who was a young paratrooper during D-Day in WWII.

Later we'll hear from Dwight Lawton of St. Petersburg. Lawton served on a US Navy destroyer in the early 1950's reaching the rank of lieutenant. For many years he's been active in peace and social justice causes- including as a leader with the group Veterans for Peace....

Military supporters flocked to see the Blue Angels fighter jets swoop and soar around MacDill Air Force Base for the annual air show. But dozens of people gathered near the base to protest the war in Iraq, a country that the US invaded seven years ago.

A parade honoring veterans took place at James Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa this morning. More than thirty-five units including veterans service organizations, high school bands, and Gasparilla krewes were part of the procession.
