Hillsborough County Commission discusses art funding, local talent listen

Today the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners approved amendments to an ordinance that will likely curb the amount of money the county spends on public art. It can now constitute one percent or less of a public building’s project cost, and can go to zero in tough times. All projects will be capped at $150 thousand. But it was the inclusion of local artists - not the cuts – that were the big issue at today’s hearing. The issue drew an impassioned plea from activist Marilyn Smith.

Perri Neri will appear at University Tampa for the opening of a 3 UT alumni art show, including Perri, Chalet Comellas, and Rob Bovarnick. The show opens Friday, November 6th and runs through December 10th. The opening is from 7-9 pm and includes experimental dance by Susan Taylor Lennon. Public art unveiled on Tampa Riverwalk listen

A new work of public art was dedicated in downtown Tampa this morning. A cenotaph and art installation called “Ceremonial Space” is located at the south end of Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park on the Riverwalk near the Tampa Bay History Center.

This is City Council member Linda Saul-Sena’s reaction: “The public art piece is an extraordinarily beautiful place to visit.”

The Fine Arts Society of Sarasota hosts the 38th Creators and Collectors Tour at artists’ studios in Sarasota on March 13th and 14th.

The president of the Fine Arts Society in Sarasota, Alice Allen, says that their mission is to expose the public to different forms of art and to provide scholarships to fine arts students in Sarasota.

In the 1970s, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert Pirsig, sold millions of copies and was described as the most widely read philosophy book ever.

One man who fell under the spell of that book was Mark Richardson, who ended up taking the same itinerary, from Minneapolis to San Francisco as did Pirsig.

Richardson has now written his own book on it, called, Zen and Now: On the Trail of Robert Pirsig and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Early Saturday night in Ybor City, Romeo’s Art Gallery was the place to be in Tampa. Nearly 30 local artists were donating their art to help raise funds for a new shelter being constructed for 16 female Iraq war veterans from the Tampa Bay \area.

The name of the event was “Faces of Athena,” and it was the brainchild of former state legislator Sara Romeo. Romeo said she got the idea from her role as executive director for Tampa Crossroads.

During this Memorial Weekend, the anti-war exhibit, “Eyes Wide Open,” will be on display at Largo’s Central Park.

Sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, better known as the Quakers, the exhibit consists of thousands of pairs of shoes, lined up in rows, representing all of the servicemen and women killed in Iraq.

The exhibit will be on display throughout the Memorial Day weekend from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
