Officials for transit authorities in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties are considering merging the two systems to save money. Both PSTA and HART boards plan to ask the Florida legislature to fund a detailed study of the savings that would result from combining staff resources.

PSTA and HART already split the cost of a preliminary state-mandated coordination study. The boards will vote on a final list of recommendations and funding requests based on the results at their meeting next month....

The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) is installing small brass plaques commemorating Rosa Parks in all of their buses. Transit officials showed them off today at the Yukon transfer center in Tampa's Sulphur Springs neighborhood. The move comes more than fifty years after the civil rights activist was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger.

Hillsborough County officials broke ground today on what will soon be the county’s version of bus rapid transit. MetroRapid will run along Nebraska Avenue from the USF area to downtown Tampa quicker than other bus lines. Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandra Murman hopes the route will be a boost for ridership when it is completed next year.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced Wednesday that he will host three town hall meetings in August on the impacts of the Republican National Convention on residents and businesses.

The meetings will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 14 (Florida Aquarium), August 15 (Stetson University College of Law Tampa campus) and August 16 (Kate Jackson Community Center on South Rome Ave.).

Yesterday the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, or HART, approved a 100 million dollar budget for the next fiscal year. The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority plans to increase the millage rate on a typical property owner by about 41 cents per year. That’s even though HART’s overall proposed budget is being reduced by 3.2 percent.
