The term “offshore drilling” was the ticket to free admission into the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Saturday evening. The tiny aquarium, known for its sizeable rehabilitative work with marine animals, invited visitors to attend a discussion about the upcoming vote in Congress on Sept. 12 that will determine whether drilling will be allowed within 50 miles of the Florida coastline.

Despite inclement weather, hundreds attended the public event sponsored by the Don’t Rig Florida Campaig...

A week ago in Washington, a group of 10 senators -- five Republicans and five Democrats -- calling themselves “The Gang of 10,” announced a bipartisan plan that they said would break the country’s energy stalemate.

The highlight is $84 billion in tax credits and subsidies for alternative fuels and renewables. The plan intends to pay for it in part by eliminating $30 billion in tax breaks for energy companies and requiring that the federal government get its cut of revenue from Gulf...

President George Bush announced today that by executive order he was lifting a presidential moratorium on drilling for oil and natural gas on the Outer Continental Shelf, hoping to prod Congress to act to clear the way for exploration along the nation’s coastline in response to soaring energy prices.

However, the moratorium on offshore drilling imposed by Congress back in 1981 still exists. But Bush left no doubt that he wanted Congress to end its 27-year-old prohibition.

President George Bush urged Congress today to open offshore waters and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska to oil drilling.

In comments to reporters following a meeting with his economic team at the Department of Energy, Bush said one of the main reasons for high gas prices is because demand for crude oil is exceeding supply.

Bush blamed Democrats in Congress for blocking drilling off the coast and in ANWR, and pressed House leaders to address rising oil prices before...

John McCain tonight announced he wants to lift the federal moratorium on offshore drilling and allow individual states to decide whether to allow oil and gas exploration.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson is among the Democrats denouncing McCain.

McCain’s announcement comes as gas prices are at an all time, leading a majority in a new poll to agree with such a plan. But Nelson took issue with the way the question was asked.

That new poll is a Rasmussen survey released today that showed 67 p...

Sen. John McCain today said he will urge lifting the two-decade-old federal moratorium on gas and oil exploration that covers most of the U.S. coast and let states decide whether to allow drilling. That opinion is a reversal for McCain, who has supported the federal ban in the past.

Speaking to reporters in Alexandria, VA, McCain said the U.S. must embark on a national mission to reduce its dependence on foreign oil.

Holly Binns, field director for Environment Florida, calls off-shore ...
