President George Bush urged Congress today to open offshore waters and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska to oil drilling.
In comments to reporters following a meeting with his economic team at the Department of Energy, Bush said one of the main reasons for high gas prices is because demand for crude oil is exceeding supply.

At a Tampa Downtown Partnership meeting today, WMNF spoke with business people and elected officials about the possibility of drilling for oil off the coast of Florida.
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio told WMNF she opposes drilling off the state’s coast. Iorio questioned the wisdom of constructing oil rigs there, especially considering how dependent the state is on tourism.

John McCain tonight announced he wants to lift the federal moratorium on offshore drilling and allow individual states to decide whether to allow oil and gas exploration.
Florida Sen. Bill Nelson is among the Democrats denouncing McCain.
McCain’s announcement comes as gas prices are at an all time, leading a majority in a new poll to agree with such a plan. But Nelson took issue with the way the question was asked.

Sen. John McCain today said he will urge lifting the two-decade-old federal moratorium on gas and oil exploration that covers most of the U.S. coast and let states decide whether to allow drilling. That opinion is a reversal for McCain, who has supported the federal ban in the past.
Speaking to reporters in Alexandria, VA, McCain said the U.S. must embark on a national mission to reduce its dependence on foreign oil.
