Last Friday night local innovators shared some of their latest big ideas for transforming Tampa into a better city. This was the 8th time that the event, called Pecha Kucha, came to the Tampa Bay Area. The City of Tampa is considering a Community Garden Ordinance. Last night about a dozen people discussed the urban gardens and the city’s proposal at the Bamboozle Cafe in downtown Tampa.

This weekend in Tampa marked the first official gathering of the local chapter of Food Not Lawns, an international movement dedicated to building communities by turning yards into edible gardens.
The movement began in 2006, as a grassroots gardening project in Eugene, Oregon and now has dozens of chapters in cities all over the world. Our special guest today on the Sustainable Living program was Tampa’s premier vegetable farmer, Rick Martinez, founder of Sweetwater Organic Farm in West Tampa.
Sweetwater is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm where you can buy food shares from the farm, and volunteer to help grow the vegetables through-out the season. Rick answered a variety of questions from listeners.

Willow LaMonte, a local organic gardening avocate, is teaching classes on gardening. Willow gave a six-minute description of subjects covered and what's growing in her backyard. The special guest for the remainder of the program was Eric Haase, a local screenwritter, author, and creater of the Conscious Consumer Network. Eric talked about his near-death experience, which moved him to write the play Apocalypse Near, and the book with the same name.
