A former Mayor and City Commissioner in Sarasota, the 37-year-old Kirschner talked about how it's vital that Latinos, who will continue to gain in population in the U.S., be treated as an important demographic, vs. being demonized when it comes to discussing illegal immigration.

As we reported Monday, a federal judge in Birmingham, Alabama has temporarily blocked enforcement of that state's new law cracking down on undocumented immigration. It is one of the country's toughest on immigrants and has prompted some community organizers in Florida to travel to Alabama and take action.

A late-filed amendment filed by Senator John thrasher that would have required state employers to use e-Verify failed during the Senate’s debate of a controversial Arizona-style immigration bill. That amendment would fine businesses up to $1,500 for each worker found to be unauthorized to work in the US. While his Senate colleagues had harsh criticisms of the federal E-verify system, Thrasher defended the system.
