In a special session this week, the State Legislature voted to pass the bill which will provide funding for commuter and light rail in central and south Florida. Many in the state felt that this legislation was critical to acquiring the federal funds necessary to build high-speed rail between Tampa and Orlando. A bill that would clear the way for commuter and high-speed rail systems is heading to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's desk.

Final passage came yesterday in the Florida Senate on a bipartisan 27-10 vote to close out a 6-day special legislative session. It easily passed in the House on Monday.

Crist is a strong supporter of the bill (HB 1B) and is expected to sign it into law.

Pinellas County is on the move toward an improved transit system. A Pinellas County Transit and Land Use Workshop was held today in Pinellas Park to discuss the county’s plans for future transportation improvement.

The Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority (TBARTA) voted unanimously this morning to support Hillsborough County’s efforts to build light rail. TBARTA will back a referendum that could be placed on the 2010 ballot in Hillsborough to fund transit by increasing sales tax.
