Fast food workers are walking off the job today in more than fifty cities across the country, including in Tampa.

They’re fighting for the right to unionize and for an end to poverty wages.

In Tampa a rally will began at 4:30 p.m. Thursday outside the Wendy’s on Fowler Avenue at 15th Street.

WMNF interviewed Aaron Carmella, a field representative for the West Central Florida Federation of Labor.

USF students are planning a protest Thursday night against shorter library hours.

But instead of a traditional “sit-in,” the activists are staging a “sit-out” outside the shuttered library where they used to do late night studying on the Tampa campus.

WMNF News spoke with Larry Roop, a 1st year student majoring in nursing and with another organizer, Melissa Garzon, a 2nd year student majoring in sociology.

Citizens Property Insurance is proposing a 7.5% overall rate increase for policyholders in Florida, including increases for sinkhole coverage. The state-backed insurance company appeared before the Office of Insurance Regulation Tuesday night in Tampa to plead its case. U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for releases hundreds of thousands of classified military documents. During a press conference after the sentencing hearing Wednesday, Manning’s defense attorney, David Coombs said he and other supporters are asking President Obama to grant a pardon, but if that doesn’t work, there are still other ways to get Manning out before he’s eligible for parole.

Advocates of breastfeeding say it improves the health of infants and even educational outcomes later in childhood.

The Florida Department of Health in Manatee County is hosting a celebration of World Breastfeeding Month Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until noon at the Bradenton Riverwalk. There will be breastfeeding counselors, education materials and nutrition educators.
