Former Speaker and possible Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich hosted a jobs summit in St. Petersburg yesterday to promote ways lawmakers can create jobs now.

But his idea for more oil drilling was met by scores of protesters.

Today Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio announced a major reorganization of city government to help balance the budget.

As a result, more than 16 positions will be eliminated, saving the city more than $3 million this year. Iorio has already announced that some of those positions would be cut. Such as the vacant Convention Center & Tourism Director whose salary and benefits amount to nearly $200,000

Seeing combat oversees can be a challenge, but for many veterans, finding a job is a battle that is just as hard to wage. A group called Recruit Military held a job fair for veterans this morning at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts to help veterans get work.

In recent years, Tampa has laid off more than 100 employees and eliminated hundreds of part time, seasonal or otherwise vacant positions to cope with diminishing revenues.

Because of those losses, several City Council members today objected to learn that a request for a million dollars to hire temporary staffing positions came before them.

Greg Spearman is Tampa’s director of purchasing. He said there was a compelling reason for the funding request.

Today, the University of South Florida hosted a professional career resources expo providing tips to people seeking employment.

Florida’s unemployment rates are at a 15-year high of 8.6 percent; and many of the people looking for work are professionals.

More jobs were lost in the Tampa Bay area in May and June than in any other area of the state, and Florida led the entire nation in job losses in June. U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao was in St. Petersburg’s Midtown neighborhood this afternoon to break ground on the Pinellas County Job Corps Center.

Job Corps is a “no-cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor,” according to its website.

Chao said the Job Corps Center, which will open in the summer of 2009 at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and Twenty-Second Street South, will cost $40-million to construct. According to Chao...
