More jobs were lost in the Tampa Bay area in May and June than in any other area of the state, and Florida led the entire nation in job losses in June. With the backdrop of such a dismal employment outlook, WMNF spoke with job seekers and their potential employers at a job fair at the St. Pete Times Forum today.

Job Corps breaks ground on new center listen

U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao was in St. Petersburg’s Midtown neighborhood this afternoon to break ground on the Pinellas County Job Corps Center.

Job Corps is a “no-cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor,” according to its website.

Chao said the Job Corps Center, which will open in the summer of 2009 at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and Twenty-Second Street South, will cost $40-million to construct. According to Chao...

Job Fair St. Pete following financial bailouts

Inside the Coliseum in St. Petersburg today, a job fair brought together people looking for work and 38 companies or government agencies that are either hiring or offering employment services.

With unemployment numbers across the country, and especially in the bay area at their highest levels in years, many of the job seekers were determined to find positions but aware of the challenges of the current economy.
