President Obama declared January National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month. In response, the Tampa Bay Area Task Force on Human Trafficking gathered today to discuss various aspects of the problem that is still widely regarded as unknown.

Last night the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Dream Act, but a vote was delayed in the Senate this morning. The act would give conditional green cards to undocumented immigrants if they graduate from high school and pursue college or a job in the military. They could eventually apply for citizenship if they meet all requirements. Opponents, like Louisiana Republican Senator David Vitter, don’t want these undocumented immigrants to have a path to citizenship.

Today Florida's Attorney General Bill McCollum threw his support behind a proposed harsh immigration law. It will be introduced by Representative William Snyder of Stuart. McCollum says that, if passed, the law would require police officers to check immigration status during some stops.

An Arizona-style immigration law is one step closer to getting onto the books in Florida. Today demonstrators in three Florida cities urged US Senator George LeMieux to cosponsor the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM Act. Tampa was one of these.
