This week the Students Protecting the Environment and Animals with Knowledge (SPEAK) are sponsoring an exhibit comparing the exploitation of humans and animals. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ young adult division, PETA2, was also at the exhibit, showing images of torture, mutilation, and imprisonment. They made the point that all exploited species suffer.

The nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts were formed by the heirs of the Sun Oil Company in 1948. The goal of the Pew Trusts is to improve public policy, inform the public, and stimulate civic life through analytic research. The trusts formed the Pew Research Council in 2004 and this group sponsored a town hall type forum, at the USF campus yesterday to discuss the intersection of 3 issues, National Security, Energy Policy, and Climate Change. A new report on the dangers of global warming says the country is headed for strong heat waves in coming decades, that will affect cities and farmers and threaten wildlife with extinction.
The report, called More Extreme Heat Waves: Global Warming's Wake Up Call, is sponsored by medical, environmental and civil rights organizations.
It lists 30 different American cities, and breaks them up into three different categories of vulnerabilities to heat waves in the future.

At some point in the next hour, The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a historic climate change bill, and its passage remains uncertain at this time.
Politico.com reported today that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the bill’s sponsors are working the floor furiously, twisting arms to squeeze ‘some last minute yes votes out of undecided members’.

On June 20, 2009, approximately 200 people volunteered their time to plant 10,000 sea oat seedlings on St. Pete Beach as part of a multi-faceted beach preservation project initiated by the city’s Beach Stewardship Committee. According to a new study, Florida’s clean energy economy grew nearly 8 percent between 1998 and 2007. The study by the Pew Charitable Trusts released today found that Florida was among the top 10 states in America’s clean energy, or Green Job economy.
Lori Grange is the interim deputy director with the Pew Center on the States.

According to an analysis of state enforcement statistics released earlier this week, the Charlie Crist’s administration’s touted 2007 pledge to toughen anti-pollution enforcement in Florida has been a failure. That’s according to the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.

Hillsborough County Commissioners today heard about a bold proposal by private developers to purchase much of county-owned Cone Ranch, north of Plant City.
The county purchased the 12,000 acres two decades ago and has transferred control of it to its water department.
County Chairman Ken Hagen brought the issue to the Board. He emphasized that he wants to make sure the area is not used for commercial development, and said after researching the proposal that he thinks it could work.
