Proposal for Light Rail in Pinellas Plus Sandra Fluke's Testimony Before Congress

Last Call Monday | Listen to this entire show:

Good afternoon, welcome to the Last Call. I’m Rob Lorei. Coming up today we’ll talk about public transportation.

Pinellas is considering a plan to build a 24 mile light rail system linking the central part of downtown St. Petersburg with Clearwater. There’s also potential in the system to build a line that would extend over the new Howard Frankland Bridge.

Here to talk about the idea is St. Petersburg City Council member Jeff Danner who is also chairman of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority.

Later, we'll hear Sandra Fluke's opening statement to a Congressional committee on access to contraception. Her testimony touched off a controversy involving very critical comments about her by radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

Thank you for playing Sandra Fluke's entire testimony this afternoon. I had seen news releases about it, but not heard the actual testimony. It also made the commute home more bearable. One topic that rarely gets touched upon in the contraception debate is the women who need hormonal birth control for issues other than contraception (e.g. ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and dysmenorrhea). Many women who need contraception are married and trying to manage their families--hardly "sluts" and "prostitutes." It was nice to hear Fluke stress that in her testimony. I'm just sorry it's not reaching the news blogs to counter the "Contraceptives = free sex" argument Rush and his cronies seem to favor. I think Rush Limbaugh can't think of a credible way to counter such a testimony, so his best defense is a good offense. Offensive words work well in his shock jock profession. Only this time he stepped over the line.
