As the Supreme Court hears a challenge to the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Prop 8 this week, community activists are planning a vigil in support of LGBT equality Tuesday evening in Tampa. Jarrod Scarbrough heads the group Get Equal Florida.
"There's actually going to be a vigil that we're going to hold in downtown Tampa. It is a way for the local LGBT community and our allies and friends to come together and stand witness as the Suprem Court starts to work on reviewing and hearing testimony in both the Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act case that they're hearing."
What will you be doing at the vigil?
"We will stand as a community, we have a line-up of speakers who are going to talk about a various equality and injustice issues and then we are actually going to be lighting a bunch of glow sticks to light up the night for justice."
What are you trying to accomplish?
"With the vigil we are trying to bring the community together for one thing and we are also looking at educating our community and our friends, our neighbors further on the ways in which the inequality which the LGBT community faces affects us all."
What organizations will be attending?
"We have several Metropolitan Community Church congregations that will be in attendance. We also have Get Equal Florida, we have the ACLU, we have people from AWAKE Tampa, so we have a pretty diverse group that will be there."
When and where will the vigil happen?
"The vigil will happen on Tuesday, March 26th at 7:30 PM. It will be downtown Tampa at the Sam Gibbons Courthouse which is on the corner of Florida and Polk."
