The TransPacific Partnership: NAFTA on Steroids? And Pam Iorio Remembers Fred Karl
Good morning, welcome to Radioactivity. I'm Rob Lorei. Coming up we'll talk with former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio about the death of her mentor- former Hillsborough County Administrator Fred Karl.
But first we'll look at a proposed new free trade agreement- the TransPacific Partnership. This weekend labor, human rights and environmental activists will hold a meeting in Tampa at 1PM this Saturday at the Roosevelt 2.0 in Ybor City to discuss the TPP. And with us right now are two people who are working to try to block the TPP from passage. Mark Skogman (727-992-7171) is with the Sierra Club….and Alisa Simmons is with Public Citizen in Washington, D. C. FMI
Former Florida Supreme Court Justice and Hillsborough County Administrator Fred Kark died this morning at the age of 88.
Fred Karl was born in 1924 in Daytona Beach. At the age of 18 he was commissioned a second lieutenant and saw action as a tank platoon leader in Europe. Wounded during the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. He later served eight years as a state representative and four years as a state senator. Karl became Florida’s first public counsel in 1974 and was the last elected Justice of the Florida Supreme Court two years later. After resigning in 1978, he returned to government service—first as county attorney, then as county administrator of Hillsborough County. He was asked to take over the helm of Tampa General Hospital in 1994. After leaving this post, he was appointed city attorney by newly elected Tampa mayor, Pam Iorio.
