Erica Scharf who is the director, producer, and cinematographer of the documentary "Up Heartbreak Hill" talks about the hopes and heartbreaks of young people on the Navajo Reservation in Navajo, New Mexico. We see teen angst and conflicts but in the context of Native Culture. The lives of the young people and their families are seen though the special lens of their running which is an integral aspect of the Navajo culture. Erica lived in a trailer on the high school parking lot and developed a close relationship with the community allowing the viewers of the film to get very meaningful exposure to Navajo Culture. The documentary is part of the POV series on PBS and will be up on the website through August.
