Democrats have been pushing Washington lawmakers to extend emergency compensation to 1.3 million long-term unemployed people who lost their benefits last week. During a conference call Friday, Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez said he’s hopeful that a bi-partisan bill extending benefits for three months will pass when Congress reconvenes next week. The bill is sponsored by Rhode Island Democratic Senator Jack Reed and Senator Dean Heller, a Republican from Nevada. President Obama will also press Congress to pass the bill during an event planned for Tuesday.
