Wage Theft: A Multi-Million Dollar Problem Here In Florida01/31/12 Robert Lorei
Radioactivity: Live Call-In (Tuesday) | Listen to this entire show:
Good morning, welcome to Radioactivity. I’m Rob Lorei. Coming up today we’ll talk about wage theft here in Florida—are employers paying fair wages to employees. A new study says some are not and the losses to workers are in the millions. Later we’ll talk about an effort to poll Americans on questions that the mainstream media rarely asks- such as whether to develop a Department of peace, whether to close some of the many overseas military bases and whether they favor a single payer health insurance system in the US.
Thanks to the more than 12000 people who made phone calls and online donations in the past four days to our Winter fund drive. We raised 99,000 from Friday morning to last night. We came up about $21,000 short. And there is still time to donate. If you missed the drive you can go online at wmnf.org and make a donation now by clicking the pledge button on our home page.
First up—wage theft. A New study says that wage theft is widespread in Florida. And that workers in the tourism, retail and construction industries are frequently not paid the full wages that are due to them. Joining us now by telephone is the author of the report on wage theft- Cynthia Hernandez. She’s with the Research Institute on Social and Economic Policy at Florida International University.
