On today’s WMNF 88.5 FM Sustainable Living program we started with a short interview about the upcoming (February 9th) Urban Small to Large Farm Conference that takes place at the Pinellas County Extension Service, on 12520 Ulmerton Rd in Largo. Robert Kluson, the Sarasota Vegetable Extension Agent, filled us in on the details. He'll be teaching Chickens 101 at Saturday's conference. We spent the remainder of the show talking with a couple of WMNF volunteers, Paul & Gail Carroll that were instrumental in winning WMNF a Water Wise & Florida Friendly Landscaping Award in 2012. Also we had the Hillsborough County Water Wise Coordinator, Virginia Overstreet, join the program. We talked about the big issues of lawns and the amount of water they require, and the alternative of using appropriate native plants that only require a fraction of lawn watering, mainly to establish them. Check out your local County’s IFAS UF Extension office for more on Water Wise & Florida Friendly Landscaping. This week’s farm conference will be at the Pinellas County Extension office. Visit their website for more on the conference.
