Thursday the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it was awarding a $30 million grant to the Tampa Housing Authority to help fund the Encore project in downtown Tampa and nearby communities.

The area was home to Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. The twist has its Roots there. Now The Tampa Housing Authority and The US Department of Housing and Urban Development are bringing new life into what was known as Central Park Village in Downtown Tampa. $38 million of federal stimulus funds will go toward revitalization of Tampa’s Central Park Village area. The former public housing project will be re-built with some private investment as mixed-use development branded “Encore.”
In addition to the Recovery Act funds for the Central Park Village / Encore project, Democratic member of Congress Kathy Castor says housing initiatives in Pinellas and Pasco counties will receive $50 million.
