Today the Poverty in the Americas conference concluded at the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus. It stressed the relationship between poverty in South America and the daily lives of their neighbors to the north.
If you knocked back a cup of coffee this morning, it may have come from beans grown in Columbia. If you stirred in a little sugar, it might have started out in a Brazilian cane field. Many of those working on South American plantations live in poverty despite the patronag...2 comments

Miami officials announced today that their city’s Police Chief is stepping down. Chief John Timoney says he will stay on the job until a new chief is selected. Also today, newly elected Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado was sworn in. He has indicated he wanted to remove Timoney from the position.
Timoney was Miami’s police chief for seven years, but many activists remember him best for how he handled protests in 2003 against the Free Trade Area of the Americas, or FTAA. Tampa activist Kelly Benja...Be the first to comment
