Mandate will require utilities to produce more renewable power listen

On Friday, the Public Service Commission unanimously agreed to require the state’s utilities to generate 20 percent of their power from renewable resources by 2020.

That ambitious mandate came from Gov. Charlie Crist back in 2007. Currently, the state gets less than 3 percent of its power from alternative sources.

The proposal calls for 7 percent renewable energy by January 2013, 12 percent by 2016, 18 percent by 2019, and 20 percent by the end of 2020.

About two dozen protesters traveled from St. Petersburg to Tallahassee, demanding a new investigation into the shooting death of teenager Javon Dawson.

The protest came less than 24 hours after Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe exonerated St. Pete Police officer Terence Nemeth in an eight-page report on the death of Dawson.
