A non-profit nearly four years in the making is raising money this weekend by having donors spend the night in a box this Saturday night at Nativity Catholic Church. Family Promise of Greater Brandon began organizing in 2010 and is about to finally open its doors to families in need next month.

The chapter is an off shoot of a nationwide coalition of faith-based groups that started in New Jersey in 1986. Deborah Humphrey is the board president.

About 50 low-income residents are worried they are going to lose their homes when the Briarwood RV Park in Largo is redeveloped. Tuesday they took their case to Pinellas County Commissioners, who put off the rezoning decision for 30 days.

Thursday Tampa City Council considered further crackdowns on panhandling.

The discussion was still going on when we went to air.

During public comment in the morning nine people asked council to enact an ordinance putting more limits on when and where people can ask for handouts. Shawn Robinson, president of Hillsborough Community College's Ybor City campus, says panhandlers harass students and faculty.

Arrested activist claims St. Pete Police harass people without homes in Williams Park listen

A longtime homeless activist in St. Petersburg is claiming that police officers hurt him while he was trying to defend a homeless man in Williams Park Wednesday. Bruce Wright was arrested and charged with obstruction after another man being arrested got away. According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, officers had an arrest warrant for a man in the park. That report quoted Wright as saying “stop harassing that man” and then asking what he had done wrong.

A Tampa banker and volunteer football coach was honored by city council this morning for his efforts to feed people without homes during the holiday season.
