The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held its 6th annual banquet Saturday at the Tampa Convention Center. Speakers included Georgetown University professor John Esposito and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim in Congress.

In 2006, Keith Ellison was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Minnesota. When he took office in January 2007, he became the first Muslim to ever serve in Congress. In the first half of this interview recorded on Saturday in Tampa, WMNF began by asking Ellison about his background.
“… I’m very proud of my country right now – it’s not the first time I’ve been proud of my country, but it is one of those times I’ve been really honored to be an American.”
