A new civil rights group for Muslims sponsored a showing of the new film “Inside Islam: What a billion Muslims really think.” The film was at USF in Tampa last Saturday night, and was designed to challenge the notion that Islam and the West are on a collision course.

A new report released today by two liberal groups says a majority of Americans hold progressive positions on a broad range of controversial issues and key constituencies that favor progressives are growing larger.
Media Matters and the Campaign For America’s Future says it has come up with the conclusions based on looking closely at polls conducted by respected organizations from CNN/Opinion Research, Gallup, the Los Angeles Times as well population demographics.

A new survey released today said that Tampa scored with the American public after last Sunday’s smashing Super Bowl.
The survey produced by Competitive Edge Research, said that the city received a 6 percent positive bump.
John Nienstedt conducted the survey. Nienstedt says Tampa’s positive impressions were most dramatic from viewers in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.
The results were not so favorable about halftime events.

In Florida, the economic news is not all bad, according to a new University of Florida survey on consumer confidence.
Chris McCarty is survey director of UF’s Survey Research Center. “Consumer confidence in Florida is up from November … That’s still a low number historically speaking, but it is certainly better than it was last month.”
Sixty-seven points is not a percentage, but an index, McCarty said. The monthly Florida Consumer Attitude Survey is indexed to a 1966 baseline of 100. ...

A new USA Today/Gallup poll shows nearly 7 out of 10 adults, or 68 percent, say they have a favorable opinion of President-elect Barack Obama; and almost as many, or 65 percent, say they think the country will be better four years from now.
That’s much higher expectations than for either Bill Clinton or George W. Bush after they were first elected. In both cases, slightly more than 50 percent said they thought the country would be better off in four years.

Among the more unique presidential polls that have came out this campaign season, one is called the Center for Rural Strategies poll.
Commissioned on behalf of the National Rural Assembly, it sampled rural voters in 13 swing states, including Florida, throughout this month.
The results show Obama with a narrow 1 point lead. Four years ago, George W. Bush beat John Kerry by 19 points with this demographic.

The Democratic National Convention has given Barack Obama a bounce in his race against John McCain.
A USA Today/Gallup poll conducted over the weekend shows Obama up by a margin of 50 percent to 43 percent over McCain. The survey also showed that McCain's advantage in handling terrorism was dramatically reduced, and his "unfavorable" rating ticked up to its highest level this year.
