About 1500 farmworkers and their allies completed their 200 mile, two week March for Respect, Rights and Fair food yesterday in Lakeland. They gathered at the headquarters of Publix in hope that the supermarket giant would honor what they’re calling a Fair Food Program.

Wednesday the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and their allies pass through Tampa on their 200 mile march from Ft Myers to the headquarters of Publix in Lakeland; the marchers are calling on Publix to honor the social responsibility agreement for farm labor reform known as the Fair Food Program.

Yesterday, the nationwide specialty grocery store chain, Trader Joe’s, signed a landmark agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. It guarantees the company will pay one penny more per pound of tomatoes picked by immigrant farm workers in South Florida. Yesterday, about 250 protestors packed the sidewalks in front of Sarasota’s newest Publix. They are asking the food giant to sign the Fair Food Agreement in support of tomato harvesters across Florida.
