Miami Beach state Sen. Dan Gelber announced this morning that he is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in 2010.

Gelber joins Miami area Congressman Kendrick Meek as the only major candidates to announce their participating in the Senate race for the seat being vacated by Mel Martinez.

Before being elected to the Senate for the first time last November, Gelber served as the House Democratic Leader in Tallahassee.
