Activists from the Uhuru are demanding that St. Pete Police officers remove themselves from black communities. During a protest in front of the police station today, nine people spoke out against the agency for what they call terrorizing black neighborhoods.

People from all over the country will be gathering in St. Petersburg next week for the African People’s Solidarity Committee’s international conference. Groups from all over the world were invited. Penny Hess who chairs the group said some 100 people will brainstorm ideas on how non-minority groups can stand in solidarity with oppressed communities in Africa.

Members of the Uhuru movement in St. Petersburg think the United States isn’t doing enough to help the poor. Last Friday the group held a reception for a Venezuelan representative who told them why the U.S. could learn a thing or two from his country’s social programs.

Tomorrow the African People’s Solidarity Committee is holding a Day in Solidarity with African People in St. Petersburg. The theme of the meeting is “Beyond Obama: Seeking real solutions to the growing racial divide in the U.S.” One speaker is Glen Ford. He is executive editor of Black Agenda Report and a member of the Black is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations.
