Florida's unemployment website launched in October 2103. In the year-and-a-half since CONNECT opened Governor Rick Scott has defended the program. That's despite the fact that many residents have had trouble getting their benefits from the system.

Today on Radioactivity, Rob Lorei's guest was wrongly asked to repay $10,000 in unemployment benefits by the state. "Barry" who asked us not to use his real name, says he was terminated by his employer, applied for and received unemployment benefits, exhausted the benefits and (five months later) was asked by the state to repay all the money. Critics of Floridas botched unemployment claims website are taking aim at Governor Rick Scott and his connection to the private company contracted to operate the CONNECT site.
The website launched in October, but it is still not functioning correctly. Thousands of unemployment applicants have been locked out of the system.

A Pinellas County Republican hoping to join Congress this year, Kathleen Peters, released a statement supporting an extension in unemployment benefits Tuesday. Peters wrote I am calling on Congress to stop this partisan gridlock and pass a three month reinstatement of unemployment benefits that is paid for in full.

Democrats have been pushing Washington lawmakers to extend emergency compensation to 1.3 million long-term unemployed people who lost their benefits last week. During a conference call Friday, Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez said hes hopeful that a bi-partisan bill extending benefits for three months will pass when Congress reconvenes next week. Glitches in Floridas new unemployment compensation website have been keeping some people from receiving their only form of income. The CONNECT website launched in October, but still isnt working up to par. Unemployed people like Susan McGrath say they cant even get anyone on the phone to answer questions
What happens is, theyll say, its a high-volume call period, please call back later.
