A $2 billion federal program to reimburse hospitals that many poor and uninsured patients will expire at the end of June. Florida Governor Rick Scott sent president Obama a letter asking the feds to renew the LIP program. In St. Petersburg Thursday morning Scott reiterated his support for receiving the federal funds.

Tuesday night, four board members prevailed in voting to terminate Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia.
The move has stirred community-wide controversy because of the hefty price tag for buying out Elia's contract. The district will pay Elia $1.1 million. That's two years-worth of salary and her cozy benefits package including two retirement plans, two life insurance policies, health insurance and a car allowance. Tuesday night the Hillsborough County School Board narrowly voted to fire the district’s superintendent.
MaryEllen Elia will get more than a million dollars in compensation and her last day will be March 5.
Even though the school board voted 4-to-3 to terminate Elia’s contract, many members of the public spoke in favor of keeping her.

The Hillsborough County School board is trying to improve educational outcomes for some minority students. The board is supporting a pledge aimed at boosting graduation rates and reducing disciplinary problems among African-American and Hispanic males. But an investigation prompted by a complaint from a retired teacher about the how the district teaches minority students is still ongoing.
