As the nation grieves, people from all walks of life gathered Saturday evening in downtown Tampa to remember the victims of the Charleston shooting.

About 400 miles south of Charleston, the Tampa community came together to show solidarity. More than a hundred people attended the vigil in Gaslight Square Park Saturday evening to remember the 9 lives taken in Charleston. And at twilight, candlelight took over Gaslight.

Police say the man suspected of shooting and killing nine people to death inside a historic black church Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina has been arrested. In a speech Thursday President Barack Obama tied this shooting to a history of racism and gun violence in America. For local reaction, WMNF interviewed Gaida Kambon, the secretary general of the African Peoples’ Socialist Party.

On Monday, family and friends of a 14-year-old victim of a drive-by shooting in Tampa held a vigil. Edward Harris is of the city's latest victims of gun violence.

A black shirt and denim shorts were laid on the ground. Flowers and white balloons fluttered in the breeze. Lit candles were used to spell out “EJ”, Edward Harris’ nickname, as the people gathered to pray and remember a boy who is gone too soon.
