Actor Gary Sinise – better known as Lieutenant Dan to Forrest Gump fans -- is heading up an effort to build twelve severely wounded soldiers specially-equipped homes. Sinise, along with other charity leaders and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced the 2013 Building for America’s Bravest program during a ceremony in downtown Tampa Wednesday morning. Sinise said he enjoys giving injured soldiers some of their normal life back.

A group of activists is targeting slumlords in Tampa. Members of the Tampa Solidarity Network warned passing traffic not to rent from a USF-area apartment complex during a protest yesterday.

A wounded military veteran broke ground on what will be his new home today in St. Petersburg. The house is being paid for through a collaborative of charities, but is part of a greater effort to rehabilitate the city’s troubled Midtown area. Brian Lamb, president of the non-profit Community Partners in Revitalization said the project will help drive property values up in the neighborhood.

A Tampa Pastor is suing the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for arresting her after she helped a member of her congregation move into a home owned by someone else. Tami Robinson used centuries old land ownership loophole to try to acquire an abandoned home, but it didn’t work. Robinson said she and the woman she was helping were arrested and charged with eight felonies.

A couple who took over an abandoned house in Tampa just before the Republican convention was evicted this morning by Tampa Police.
Tyler Mitchell is an activist who was there to help the squatters, who did not want to be interviewed.
