Our first guest is Juliet Eilperin, a science writer for the Washington Post. She recently published a book, “Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks” that provides a global look at the often surprising and inexplicable ways people and cultures relate to, and engage with the ocean’s top predator, sharks. She says that more than 70 million sharks are killed every year-- their fins cut off to make shark fin soup. As many as 90% of the sharks in the world's oceans are now gone. ...

Throughout the world, used subway cars, tanks, ships and even tires have been placed on the ocean floor in the hope of creating artificial reefs – with varying degrees of success and environmental impact. A new study suggests a Navy program that sinks old warships to create artificial reefs is having some unintended consequences on the environment.
The USS Oriskany, nicknamed the Mighty O, was an aircraft carrier the US...

In addition to making oceans warmers, greenhouse gasses like CO2 in the atmosphere are making oceans more acidic. More acidic oceans could hamper the growth and survival of shell-building organisms like corals and clams. By comparing pH readings from seawater in the northeastern Pacific Ocean between 1991 and 2006, a team of scientists found the first direct evidence of ocean acidification across an entire ocean basin.

Last month at the University of South Florida, researchers from around the state gathered to discuss all types of renewable energies. Compared with some other technologies, energy from the ocean energy is undeveloped but shows potential.
Commercial ocean energy harvesting systems do not exist today. Many efforts are underway around the world, but there is no unifying infrastructure in the United States or abroad to support wider technology development.

Ocean fish, like tuna, and other seafood are a major contributor to exposure of the toxin methylmercury in humans. A study published last week in the journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles demonstrates how methylmercury originates in the ocean.
This afternoon, WMNF spoke with David Krabbenhoft, a research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and a co-author of the research paper.
“Methylmercury is a specific f...
