A major road in downtown Tampa will close to car traffic this Sunday for a few hours to make room for pedestrians, bikes and other activities; Kennedy Boulevard will shut down as part of the Cyclovia celebration.

WMNF interviewed Kris Carson, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Tampa is consistently ranked in the top five most dangerous metropolitan areas for bicycle and pedestrian deaths.

A recent accident where a child was killed crossing a section of Busch Boulevard that lacks crosswalks prompted a discussion on safety at Tampa City Council Thursday morning.

Tampa City Council member Mary Mulhern questioned Debbie Hunt from the Florida Department of Transportation.

This month Sarasota County is holding several meetings to present a draft plan for bicycle and pedestrian routes. People who attend can comment on the new draft plan.

Community activists hope Tampa can complete a 16-mile network of pedestrian trails spanning from Bayshore Boulevard to the Gandy Bridge and Picnic Island. The South Tampa Greenway have recently added a new segment on the east side of South Manhattan Avenue at Interbay Boulevard.
