A major road in downtown Tampa will close to car traffic this Sunday for a few hours to make room for pedestrians, bikes and other activities; Kennedy Boulevard will shut down as part of the Cyclovia celebration.

WMNF interviewed Kris Carson, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

A 70-year old retired police officer was killed Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle in Clearwater Tuesday morning. Doug Carey was working as a crossing guard at the intersection of Gulf to Bay Boulevard and Belcher Road. Two toddlers who were passengers in a car that ran a red light were also injured.

A 12-year old boy was struck by a car while crossing Busch Boulevard Monday morning. According to Tampa Police, the Van Buren Middle School student wasn’t badly injured, but the accident again raises the issue of what to do about the growing incidents of pedestrian accidents in Tampa. A recent accident where a child was killed crossing a section of Busch Boulevard that lacks crosswalks prompted a discussion on safety at Tampa City Council Thursday morning.

Late Monday law enforcement agencies released a list of roads that will be closed and other transportation limitations in Tampa and St. Petersburg during August's Republican National Convention.
