The first legal same-sex marriages in Florida took place Monday afternoon in Miami-Dade County; that came soon after a judge there said the county could immediately start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Monday morning Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel lifted a stay on her July ruling that Florida's same-sex marriage ban violates equal protections under the U.S. Constitution.

Same sex couples in Florida could soon be able to marry in the state. But there’s a catch – it only applies to Monroe County. Yesterday, a judge there ruled the state’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. It’s not yet clear when same-sex couples will be able to marry in Monroe County which includes the Florida Keys. That’s on hold until after the state’s appeal is complete.

Six hours after the California Supreme Court refused to overturn Proposition 8, which bans same sex marriage in the Golden State, approximately 50 people gathered at Joe Chillura Square in downtown Tampa to protest the legal decision.

In protest of the passing of Amendment 2 that bans same-sex marriage in Florida, hundreds gathered at Mirror Lake Park in St. Petersburg on Saturday.
