People in the United States use about twice as much water as other countries. That’s one of the many problems mulled over today by a team of researchers at an annual water conference at the USF Patel College of Global Sustainability.
“About 40% of the water that we use in the region is for outdoor water use.”
That’s Christine Owen, the senior manager for regulatory compliance for Tampa Bay Water.

The city of St. Petersburg doesn’t offer free curbside recycling to residents; some community-based groups are pulling together to change that. The League of Women Voters of St. Petersburg has hired a consultant to look into the feasibility of universal curbside recycling in the city. The group’s president, Karen Coale, announced the results during a press conference in front of City Hall Tuesday morning.

Researchers at the University of South Florida showed off their work with waste water and other testing technologies to officials from the Environmental Protection Agency. St. Petersburg residents have to pay $45 a year if they want their recyclables picked up curbside. The League of Women Voters of St. Petersburg wants to change that. Karen Coale, the chapter’s president, will kick off an effort called the People’s Trash Monday night at Studio@620 in downtown.

A trio of public and private groups in the Tampa Bay area is joining forces to reduce dependence on petroleum. The University of South Florida, the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County and TECO Energy committed funding to the Clean Cities Coalition this morning at USF’s Patel Center for Global Sustainability.
