HCC halts construction on Ybor campus extension listen

Construction has stopped on an extension to Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus, after the school learned that the building’s 60-foot height exceeded city standards by 15 feet.

Ashley Carl, a spokesperson for HCC, says construction on the building has not yet acceded the height standard, but would if built as designed.

Earlier this month, the Tampa City Council realized that it had no power to control the design of new buildings being constructed by Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City.

That’s after the school decided it didn’t need approval from the government body responsible for preserving the historic fabric of Ybor, the Barrio Latino Commission (BLC); and Mayor Pam Iorio agreed.
