Singer-Songwriter Neil Finn Interviewed On The Weds Sonic Detour
Sonic Detour Wednesday Dec 02 2009 5:00PM
On the Wednesday Sonic Detour Dec. 2, sometime after 5pm, I'll air an interview I recently recorded with NEIL FINN, the New Zealand singer-songwriter behind such acclaimed bands as Split Enz and Crowded House, and who for several years has maintained a career as a highly-regarded solo artist.
He's long been exceptionally respected by his peers, and as one measure of this, a slew of musicians--including Eddie Vedder, two members of Radiohead, and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr--convened in 2001 in New Zealand to perform some concerts that became Finn's live CD/DVD "7 Worlds Collide."
About a year ago, nearly all of those musicians--plus several others, including most of Wilco--now operating as a collective under the 7 Worlds Collide name reconvened in New Zealand, this time writing and recording new music for a recently-released two-CD set, "The Sun Came Out."
My conversation with Neil Finn focuses on the making of "The Sun Came Out," including Wilco's involvement, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway's surprising emergence as a singer-songwriter, the similarly surprising emergence of Neil's wife Sharon, the wildly collaborative & family (both figurative & literal) nature of the project, etc.
