Save The Chimps Director On Talking Animals

Sep 03 2008 11:30

Our guest on "Talking Animals," Sept. 3, at 11:30am, will be Dr. Carole Noon, founder and director of Save The Chimps, the world's largest sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees.

Located in Fort Pierce, FL, Save The Chimps houses upwards of 300 chimpanzees--whose previous lives were spent in research labs, the entertainment world and the pet trade--on a dozen 3-5 acre islands.

There's also a Save The Chimps location in New Mexico, a renovated version of the Coulston Foundation's facility that once served as a biomedical laboratory conducting research on chimps, racking up the worst record on animal mistreatment of any lab in the history of the Animal Welfare Act.

Those chimps and their families, abused and confined in stark laboratory settings--and other chimps used (I employ "used" advisedly) in other fields--are now living out their retirement in a wide-open, gorgeous, idyllic Florida setting under the auspices of Dr. Noon, who's been working with captive chimpanzees for nearly 25 years.

We'll be speaking with Dr. Noon live on Sept. 3, and listeners are invited to call (813-239-9663) or e-mail (DJ@wmnf.org) to participate in the conversation.
