Vanessa Collier – WMNF discovered Vanessa Collier at the 2016 Tropical Heatwave and she has become a favorite WMNF artist (we have also invited her to play on our debut Tropical Heatwave music cruise in February 2018). She is a fresh face on the American blues scene, and in addition to her soulful vocals she brings a mighty sax to the table. Vanessa was nominated for the best horn instrumentalist at the 2017 BMAs, and she was honored as the Best of 2014 Blues Breaker Artist on House of Blues Radio – and she has won awards for songwriting, as she brings strong original songs to soul and blues.

Vanessa is based out of Philadelphia, and her background is as impressive as her music. She is a graduate of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music (and most her outstanding band comes from Berklee), and she brought her vocals and sax to tours with Joe Louis Walker’s band. Rev. Billy C. Wirtz – Billy hosts the Friday afternoon Rhythm Revival show on WMNF, and he is a world famous singer-pianist-comedian whose live performances are wildly entertaining. Billy met Vanessa when her band was playing WMNF Live Music Showcase, preceding Billy’s show. He was so knocked out by her performance that he invited her to sit in on his show – and then was impressed how this young woman was deeply immersed in the post WW2 blues, soul and gospel that he plays on the program. This kicked off an ongoing music friendship and musical relationship.

They do intend to play some together this evening.
