Where do you go for election information?

Matt Cowley about over 5 years ago

On RadioActivity Rob Lorei asked for suggestions for election information: places to go for details on candidates, amendments, polling data, anything that helps you make an informed choice at the polls.

What's your favorite source of election info? Let us know in the comments.

http://www.votesmartflorida.org/mx/hm.asp?id=home Vote Smart Florida has non-partisan information about the state's constitutional amendments that are on the 11/4 general election ballot. The county stuff and state and district judges are not addressed at this site.

Thanks, Becky. This is a good site for general election horse-race updates, and an electoral count predictor: http://electoral-vote.com/ Anyone else?

Times Know Your Candidates

I am the politics editor at the Times, and I have to plug our Know Your Candidates guide. http://blogs.tampabay.com/kycgeneral08/ Know Your Candidates is a special report by the St. Petersburg Times. From candidate information to the logistics of voting, you'll find it here. We've interviewed each candidate, examined their public records and candidate questionnaires to compile information for one-stop shopping before you vote. Financial information about each candidate was obtained from financial disclosures the candidates are required to file to run. Use the links to the left or the tabs at the top of this page to find individual races.

electoral-vote.com

electoral-vote.com is a very well documented site for information about the presidential, house and senate races. I would like some guidance on some of the local and state items, particularly the amendments and judges races.

sarasota county amendments

I have an absentee ballot I am working with and have no idea where to research these amendments. The local League of Women Voters website was outdated input, from a previous election.

Amendment 2, say NO!

These are the facts. This mean spirited bigotry amendment fueled by hate and predjudice doesn't protect anyone. It only harms the people gay and STRAIGHT who have chosen to share a committed life together. There are children that will lose benefits, our policemen, firemen, who will lose health care! This is in the same category as the Jim Crow laws. Segregating our American citizens on the basis of this is wrong to it's core. Everyone has a right to happiness and there is no one you can look in the eye and tell them that they are less than you. Tell your friends, tell your family, to get the facts, and vote against this harmful amendment. Vote NO ON AMENDMENT 2.

get on this email list

I get a wide variety of enlightening and reliable political info by being on the e-mail list of Bill Buccolo. email him and ask to be included: bbuc@mac.com. For progressives who want info that isn't usually published or broadcast in the mainstream media, but which has been vetted to some extent, this is a great list to be on. I've learned A LOT from 8 years of this guy's emails.

Where do I get informed

As an modern American, I am dedicated to not reading anything in preparation for voting. If God wanted me to read to prepare myself to vote, he'd have locked me permanently into a library and then made it a polling place. So what's left? Broadcast media. What in the broadcast media is both informative and entertaining? Why, The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Call me an apostate, but there is more nutrition in comedic posturing than in gormless mechanical "balancing" or the outright partisan propaganda found on some networks. Local WMNF News and Public Interest programming is OK, except that damn Amy Goodman. Her grating voice reminds me of my ex-wife complaining about disappointments I've caused....and I don't even have an ex-wife!

Amendment 2 - Say YES!

Don't get your election information from an online public forum like this. "Love over Hate and Prejudice" is stoking panic among the fags and commit-phobics with lies. No one will loose benefits with Amendment 2. Private companies are free to allow domestic partner benefits to their employees. Individuals may purchase private health care at their discretion, so pony up the green backs that the Omboniation will be redistributing your way to buy your own damned insurance. Everyone does NOT have a right to happiness, though each has a right to peruse it, good luck but your choices will have consequences. This amendment is about whether or not society will approve and support groups of people whose relationship is not that which promotes and sustains the society. Homosexuals do not have procreate. Non-committed couples are not the foundation of a successful society. If Gays and marriage-phobes want legal protection, they should hire a lawyer. There is a legal document that can be drawn up to confer said legal rights upon their chosen partner. Make your lover your beneficiary, give your lover power of attorney, draw up a living will, buy real property together, and write out a will. Don't expect the rest of society to accept the extra taxes on us, both governmental and societal, because of your unconventional relationship of convenience. Vote YES on 2! molon labe!

it's sad . . .

I feel so sorry for you Culpepper. It's hard to imagine - in 2008 - wanting to be the kind of person that's spends their valuable time and energy seeking to divide our society. Way too much of human history relates the disastrous effects of bigotry, intolerance, narrow-mindedness, injustice and prejudice. Today we live in a state of enlightenment that allows us all to realize that PEACE and UNITY are characteristics of a truly great society; that these values are indeed what we should be striving for and creating. Live and Let Live – EQUALLY! My wife and I have been married for over a quarter of a century. We’ve raised six considerate, open-minded and progressively active young adults that represent the future of a strong and successful society. Passage of Amendment 2 does nothing to “protect” my marriage. I hope that one day you may allow yourself to see the truth and freedom that tolerance and benevolence produce.
