Eilen Jewell

Since her official 2006 debut, Boundary County, Jewell has surveyed a wide range of traditional musical styles, from the folk and jug band leanings of her early recordings, through an album-length homage to Loretta Lynn and the country gospel of her work with The Sacred Shakers, right up to her 2009 release, Sea of Tears, which bristled with the electricity of 1960s UK garage rock and Chicago blues. Her music draws on everything from classic country to early R&B, with an emphasis on sounds from the seamier side of the tracks. She can evoke the bump-and-grind exotica of vintage Southern California suburban saloons or on the flipside, Jewell imbues slow, jazzy numbers with torch and tenacity that linger long past last call. Lend her your ears, and you will quickly hear why listeners admire and adore her more with each passing year.

Jerry Miller

Jerry Miller is the guitarist in Eilen Jewell's band and if you have see her live you noticed his incredible rockabilly chops, his western swing sensibilities, and his twangy surf-rock sounds. This year he acceded to fan requests and put out a solo record that has won more acclaim for his inimitable style. Jerry’s original instrumentals, his slick pedal steel playing, and blistering guitar solos shine on the record. We will get a chance to hear Jerry Miller in bandleader mode opening the show Saturday night at Skippers.

Nook and Cranny

Hailing from Gainesville, this female-fronted quintet's repertoire has been variously described as everything from "sinister porch folk" to "bohemian hillbilly". Subjective nomenclature aside, the band's music artfully balances technical ability with a laudable focus on songcraft, paying homage to tradition while simultaneously pushing boundaries. "They're a beautiful bottomless tumbler of a band that never lets its drunk get sloppy," quoth Nine Bullets.
